![]() I know that you said about how your LO's are fine in high temps in YOUR GH, BUT, after cooking that 1 from Alligator Alley last year, in my GH, I am worried about having that happen again to this baby QMLO from your acorns. Now, we are in the 70's, 60's and 50's for the forecast, BUT, soon it will be 40F 1 day soon, and I will bring it in the GH. I have been fine so far keeping it watered and NOT frost killed. It is a real problem for me to not stress out that baby QMLO. BUT, my plants would be fine with a low of 37F. I also have a heater that will come on and shut off at much warmer temps. I can keep my plants warm in winter, no problem with my mini GH inside my main GH, and a heater OR Christmas lights that throw off some heat and a plug in device that comes on at 37F and goes off at about 57F. I do have electricity from 2 separate cords that are plugged into the outside plugs on the house and extension cords for outdoor use coming in through holes in the GH siding sealed up with expansion foam, so, "jerry rigged". I can't figure out a drip irrigation system on my own, I am totally clueless as to how to do that. I do now have a fan in the GH that helps make it not so hot in there, BUT, as for that QMLO baby, I am going to wait until it gets REALLY cold to put it in there. I do water my plants in the GH 1 time a day. Some how it had gotten "cooked' in my GH. So, I am very worried about killing it like I did to the 1 I got from Alligator Alley last year. It is very small yet, about 3 inches tall, and the "trunk" is less than a twig. Hey Joe, I have only 1 seedling (that is enough IF it lives to get big enough to plant eventually) from the acorns you sent me last year. I leave mine timed on for 6-8 min.it's just sprinklers so so not a ton of water comes out. You can adjust the timer for time of day or multiple times of day, and how long to stay on. I went on cruise last summer in 2019 and needed way to self water.tested it for a week and it worked great. Instead of a hose on the timer you get an irrigation kit and connect the sprinklers in a daisy chain and the push the sprinklers into the buckets with ea tree. YOU CANNOT OVER WATER if it has good drainage This is the first year I did that since I was so busy and didn't have the time to pull all my trees out like I usually do. If you have no way for electricity you can get one of those fans that works on solar to shoot in air. Litterally I open the greenhouse door and plug in a fan that shoots in air. My greenhouse can get to 120 degrees and it doesn't phase my live oaks as long as they have water every day And a fan circulating air from outside. The live oaks will not die in your greenhouse if they get water everyday. ![]() When its really cold, like below 20-25 degrees I have quick disconnect on the spigot. They are wrapped in that same foam noodle you use for trees to help prevent bursting. The small hoses are attached to a timer on my spigot on my house and they water once a day around the warmest time of the day 4:30 pm. Poaky, sorry I havent even read anything on here for a bit, been super weird with the Coronavirus and stuff And work etc.Īnyway, I have a auto sprinkler system. I don't think they can survive prolonged temps below 5 degrees for more than a couple days without dieback. But the very next day it was above freezing. But again was just for a few has also survived -5 to zero from about 10 pm to 8 am one time. mine have survived -11 below and -13 below in the great polar vortex year here in southern Missouri and that was a much smaller tree. Quartz mountain live oaks have survived -19 below zero temps in Oklahoma.but that was like for a couple hours. Quartz Mountain Live oaks probably can make in a 6a zone if it is fairly big when planted.a whip is really to small.you just are super lucky to have one make it. An hour north or so and they will grow and they will get die back every couple of years, the farther you go the worse it will be. I'm in 6b-7a.and we are just on the edge of no die back zone here. Also the sunshine index is super important.I am in the same sunshine zone as Dallas. They will grow in the 80's but it not even near what they can really do. You need like a whole month in the 90's for these guys to really grow. It's not that it just gets too cold, it's also that it doesn't get hot enough. ![]() there is no way.I hate to break the news to you. Ryan, I have read about you wanting to grow a live oak in Minnesota.
